The appearance of the former Jewish identity

The Bible never refers to the issue of Jewish identity as directly as the Mishnah and is only concerned a rodeo. The example of Abraham, the founder of biblical faith does not appear until the end of the eleventh chapter of Genesis, others who have a relationship with God mentioned before his appearance.

The first eleven chapters of Genesis show groups of people presented as indigenous peoples are defined by their location within an individual country. The Egyptians are living in Egypt, the Chaldeans, who lived in Babylon, etc.

Abraham breaks the traditional model and travel to a country where it is native. Abraham and his descendants are the first non-indigenous peoples and are defined by other criteria.

Unlike other groups, are more people brought into existence by the creation of an alliance. In the biblical perspective, the parameters of the alliance to establish the definition of what is a Jew, therefore, the definition is theological. Bnei Brit Jews, the Son of the alliance and a selected group.

From a theological perspective, the notion of "people God's chosen "as a basis for Jewish identity is also an extension of the notion of a covenant people, and probably means that it is the product of choice for exclusion.

The term used in the Bible is the word Bashar. Bashar Biblical scholars have an opinion as meaning an exclusive selection as in the case of marriage. Select exclusive means "the chosen people and the sanctity of one type of differentiation. Deuteronomy 7:6 says," You are a holy people of God. "

In rabbinic literature, this is not a rational choice because it is based on love of God and not based on conditions or on merit. Nothing Israel can not derogate from the Covenant. This view leaves suggest that this relationship can not legally end in divorce. This idea is based on the idea that the entry of Israel into the Sinai covenant was not voluntary.

Perhaps a better analogy is that God and Israel reflects the relationship between father and eldest son. Whatever the behavior of love child remains. The objective of Israel is a divine mission to help in the process of God to the world economic development.

In later passages of the Bible, the descendants of Jacob is called Israel "Bnei" (ie children Israel) and if the Bible is aware of the theology and the "genetic" among members. Son Israel group members indicating the number of members of the class composition class even reflected in the ceremonial bar / Bat Mitzvah today.

The nature of Israel's identity is double in nature and is reflected in the Bible. Can also be found in the case of Jonah. Jonah asked who he is and says it is in both Hebrew and God-fearing man. Its definition is national and not merely religious and legal question. Throughout the history of these two ideas have existed – A national group with a vision of the religious.

Shaye Cohen views Jews (Judah) of antiquity as an ethnic group is a ethnic group. The Jews are a special group and have been recognized as directly or indirectly related to a particular territory. Jews have shared a sense of history unique and has one or more features.

Some of the ethnic community of origin common sense, calls for a common and distinctive history, has a or more features that distinguish it, and a sense of unity and collective solidarity.
